More than 49 thousand Russian military personnel have been confirmed dead

In the war with Ukraine, by March 29, more than 49 thousand Russian military personnel had died. In the two weeks since the previous count on March 15, nearly 1,600 people have died. This is stated in new calculations by Mediazona and BBC journalists, as well as a team of volunteers.

According to the latest data, among the dead were more than 3,300 officers of the army and other security forces. About 400 of them are at the rank of lieutenant colonel and above.

The highest mortality rate in the war among prisoners was almost nine thousand people. This is approximately 18% of the total number of deaths. Among the volunteers, the losses amounted to almost six and a half thousand (13%), and among the mobilized – slightly less than six thousand (12%).

Most of the dead were military personnel aged 33 to 35 years – over five thousand people.

Journalists make calculations based on open data. The real death toll could be much higher.

Sources of “Verstka” previously reported that the Russian authorities are planning to begin a massive recruitment of troops to strengthen the group fighting with Ukraine and the possible encirclement of Kharkov. According to the publication’s interlocutors, 300 thousand people may be drafted as part of a possible mobilization.

According to the CIA, more than 300 thousand Russian military personnel have been killed or wounded since the beginning of the war.

Ukraine and Russia extremely rarely publish data on their losses.

At a press conference on February 25, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky for the first time revealed the losses of the Ukrainian army in the war with Russia. According to him, 31 thousand Ukrainian soldiers died. It is unknown whether this was only about the army or about all armed units controlled by the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in December that the Ukrainian army had lost 383 thousand people killed and wounded. Moscow itself does not disclose its losses in the war. According to Zelensky, the Russian army lost 500 thousand people killed and wounded. Parties to military conflicts tend to downplay their losses and exaggerate those of the enemy.
